Four Big Ten students from three conference schools were selected in the 2018 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft that was held Thursday in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The Big Ten has now had at least three students chosen in each of the NWSL’s six College Drafts, including a record-setting nine selections last year.
Leading the way was Nebraska midfielder Haley Hanson, who was chosen by the Houston Dash in the first round with the No. 7 overall pick. She was joined in the first round by Penn State forward Frannie Crouse, who was selected by the North Carolina Courage with the No. 10 overall choice.
Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy was drafted by Sky Blue FC in the second round with the No. 13 overall pick, and Penn State defender Brittany Basinger was chosen by the Washington Spirit in the third round with the No. 21 overall selection.
