For the fourth-consecutive year, Penn State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2006 Big Ten women's soccer regular season title as voted on by the conference coaches and released today by the Big Ten office.
The Nittany Lions are coming off a 2005 season that saw them reach the semifinal round of the NCAA Championship, their 11th postseason appearance in the program's history. Last year, Penn State finished with a 10-0 conference mark and a 23-0-2 overall record.
Illinois, tabbed second by the coaches, enters this year's competition after a successful season in which they finished 6-3-1 in conference action, 11-5-5 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Purdue, which finished second to Penn State in the final 2005 Big Ten standings with a conference mark of 7-2-1, was third in the preseason voting. Ohio State and Michigan State rounded out the top five while the complete Big Ten preseason poll appears below.
Regular season play is scheduled to begin Friday, Aug. 25, with all 11 teams in action.
