Four Big Ten Teams Ranked In National Polls

PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Four Big Ten women's soccer programs have been named in the national rankings released Friday, August 19 by Soccer Buzz. Defending Big Ten champion Penn State is the highest-ranked conference team in the poll at the No. 6 spot. The Nittany Lions finished last season 19-3-1 after ending their 2004 campaign with a 1-0 loss to Maryland in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Ohio State, the 2004 Big Ten Tournament champion, holds the No. 12 position, while Wisconsin and Illinois rank No. 17 and No. 23, respectively. The Badgers ended their season 16-6-1 after losing to Notre Dame 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Illini (16-6-2) advanced all the way to the 2004 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before falling to Santa Clara 2-0.

In addition to the national rankings, the women's soccer-only magazine ranked several Big Ten teams high in the regional polls. Seven squads were named in the Great Lakes region, four of which were ranked in the top five. Ohio State ranked No. 2, behind Notre Dame, followed by Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan to round out the top five. Penn State took the No. 2 spot in the Mid-Atlantic region between Virginia and West Virginia, respectively.

The Big Ten women's soccer season kicks off on Friday, August 26, with all 11 Conference teams in action.
