Aug. 25, 2008
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Laura Heyboer, Michigan State
Fr., F, Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian
In her collegiate debut, Heyboer netted three goals and tallied one assist in a 5-1 rout over Oakland on Friday. In the game’s first minute, the two-time Michigan High School Player of the Year set up teammate Lauren Sinacola to give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. In the second half, Heyboer ripped off three straight scores all within a 20-minute window. The hat trick plus the assist gives the newcomer seven total points on the season making her the Big Ten points leader so far this season.
Last MSU Offensive Player of the Week: Lauren Sinacola (9/3/07)
Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jamie Alvis, Illinois
Sr., D, Cypress, Calif. / Los Alamitos
Alvis played a major role in Illinois’ 2-1 overtime win against No. 22 Missouri on Saturday as she filled in for All-American defender Emily Zurrer while she was away at the Olympics in Beijing. Alvis piloted an Illini defense that held the Tigers scoreless in the first half, not allowing a shot on goal. The senior made several vital stops in the victory to earn her first career Big Ten weekly award.
Last ILL Defensive Player of the Week: Lindsey Carstens (10/08/07)
