The conference office announced on Monday the sixth weekly women’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. Minnesota's Katie Bethke was tabbed Offensive Player of the Week while Penn State's Alyssa Naeher and Christine Nairn were voted Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, for games played through Sept. 28-Oct. 4.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Katie Bethke, Minnesota
M - Jr. - Eau Claire, Wis. - Eau Claire Memorial

Katie Bethke had an astonishing 12-point, five-goal week in leading the Gophers to an unblemished 2-0 mark. Against Wisconsin on Thursday, the score was knotted, 1-1, in overtime when Bethke converted the game-winning goal off a penalty kick to put the Gophers on top and hand the Badgers their first home loss of the season.  Bethke then parlayed her offensive prowess to Sunday’s match against South Dakota, when she posted a career day with four goals and 10 points in the 9-0 win. Her first goal came midway through the first period, before scoring the next three over a 13-minute span in the second half. The junior midfielder also added a pair of helpers on the first two goals, which included the game-winner. For the weekend, Bethke had a hand in seven of the gophers 11 goals, including both game-winners. The four goals against South Dakota tie a school record and stand as the best mark in the Big Ten this season, as do her 10 points. Bethke now leads the league in both points and goals.

Last Minnesota Offensive Player of the Week: Clare Grimwood (Oct. 28, 2008)

Defensive Player of the Week:
Alyssa Naeher, Penn State
GK - SR - Seymour, Conn. - Christian Heritage School

Alyssa Naeher made one great save after another in the second half to help Penn State upset Ohio State, 2-1, on Sunday. The two-time NSCAA All-American made four of her five saves in the second half, including two while the Nittany Lions were down a player, to preserve the win. For the year, Naeher sports a .806 save percentage in 11 starts, conceding 12 goals against 50 saves. Her 1.07 GAA is accompanied by three shutouts in 2009 while facing the fourth-toughest schedule in the country.  This is the third weekly laurel of the season for Naeher.

Last Penn State Defensive Player of the Week: Alyssa Naeher (Sept. 14, 2009)

Freshman of the Week:
Christine Nairn, Penn State
M - FR - Bowie, Md. - Archbishop Spalding

Christine Nairn tallied her fourth goal of 2009 on a curling left-footed shot to break Ohio State's 307-minute shutout streak, including the Buckeyes' 179-minute shutout streak at Jeffrey Field.  It was the second straight goal in as many outings for the freshman midfielder, who currently ranks second on the team in scoring (4G, 3A) with 11 points. This is the first weekly award for Nairn, and the second Freshman of the Week laurel for the Nittany Lions.

Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Lexi Marton (Aug. 24, 2009)
