PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The 2006 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament bracket is set and was released today by the conference office. League teams closed out their Big Ten and regular season schedules on Friday. This year's tournament, hosted by Penn State University, kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 2 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 5. Penn State closed out its Big Ten schedule with a 2-1 win against Northwestern on Oct. 23, clinching its ninth consecutive conference championship and No. 1 seed with a Big Ten record of 8-1-1. The title streak is now tied with Indiana women's tennis (1987-95) as the second longest run in women's conference championship history. Only Michigan's women's swimming and diving program had a longer span of titles with 12 from 1987-98. As the top seed, Penn State will match up against No. 8 Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, in the third quarterfinal of the day, as the Wildcats posted a 4-5-1 conference record. Illinois earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a record of 8-2 and will match up against seventh-seeded Wisconsin, with a league mark of 4-5-1, at 1:30 p.m. Purdue finished the conference regular season with a 6-3-1 record to earn the No. 3 seed. The Boilermakers will take the field at 10:30 a.m. against a sixth-seeded Ohio State team that posted a 5-5 record in conference play. This year's No. 4 versus No. 5 game will feature Indiana as the fourth seed with a record of 5-4-1 and Michigan in the fifth spot with a record of 4-3-3. The 2006 Big Ten season ended with ties for fifth and seventh place with Michigan and Ohio State finishing the season with 15 points each, and Wisconsin and Northwestern rounding out the tournament-eligible teams with 13 points each. Michigan received the No. 5 spot after beating the Buckeyes in the teams' head-to-head competition while Wisconsin defeated Northwestern to close out its conference season and earn the seventh seed. The 2006 tournament title game will be broadcast live by College Sports Television (CSTV) on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
