2009 Softball Season Begins Today
Feb. 6, 2009 The Big Ten softball season commences this week as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, #5/8 Michigan, Minnesota, #11/9 Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin all throw their first pitches for the 2009 campaign in non-conference tournament games. Michigan gets things started this morning against Pittsburg in the FAU Kick-Off Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. The remaining nine teams will compete throughout the day. Michigan State, the lone team not competing this weekend, begins its 2009 season on Feb. 13 against Florida International in the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament in Miami, Fla. Minnesota heads to Florida for the South Florida Tournament in Tampa, where they will face Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida later today. Iowa travels south to Austin, Texas, for the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational to meet Stephen F. Austin and Florida State in tilts. The remaining teams head west for the weekend. Penn State and Northwestern are in Tempe, Ariz., for the Kajikawa Classic. The Nittany Lions will meet Wagner to begin the season and Wildcats take on Cal State Bakersfield. Ohio State is in New Mexico for the New Mexico State Tournament and takes the field against Cleveland State. Indiana, Purdue and Wisconsin are in the Golden State for the weekend. The Hoosiers and Boilermakers will compete in the Stacy Winsberg Memorial in Westwood and the Badgers head to Cathedral City for the Cathedral City Kickoff. Indiana will meet San Diego State and Purdue takes on Cal Poly in the opening round of the tournament. Wisconsin will face off against Fresno State to start 2009.
