Third Big Ten/ACC Softball Challenge Begins Friday
Feb. 15, 2018

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten and Atlantic Coast conferences will square off in the third annual Big Ten/ACC Softball Challenge this weekend, offering a matchup of two of the nation's premier softball conferences. This year's Challenge has expanded, with five Big Ten schools and five ACC schools playing four games each at five campus sites from Friday-Sunday.

Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin will represent the Big Ten, while ACC members Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and North Carolina State will serve as host sites for this year's Challenge. The other ACC participants will be Boston College, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.

This year's Big Ten/ACC Challenge features another high-powered field, with nearly half (9) of the 20 participating schools ranked or receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/USA Today or ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. Four schools are ranked in both the NFCA and USA Softball Top 25 -- No. 8/6 Florida State, No. 14/14 Minnesota, No. 20/19 Michigan and No. 22/21 Ohio State -- while a fifth, Nebraska, is ranked No. 22 in the USA Softball poll and is receiving votes in the NFCA balloting. In addition, Louisville, North Carolina and Northwestern are receiving votes in both polls, while Notre Dame is earning votes in the NFCA poll.

Half of this weekend's 40 Big Ten/ACC Challenge games will be televised by ACC Network Extra, which is also available to view on the WatchESPN platform. Fans are reminded that dates, times matchups and television coverage can change to weather or other events -- consult each school's official athletics web sites, social media channels or each individual site's Tournament Central pages for the latest information.

The Big Ten has posted a combined 33-31 record in the first two years of the Challenge, with Michigan going 4-0 during the inaugural event in 2016, and Minnesota and Penn State registering 4-0 records last year.
