Northwestern's Monka and Ohio State's Reeder Nab Weekly Honors
Feb. 16, 2009
Player of the Week: Adrienne Monka earns her first weekly award after a breakout performance last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, batting a team-best .571 with a 1.571 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage to lead the Wildcats to a 4-1 record. Monka began the weekend with a double against Hawaii before hitting the first two home runs of her career against No. 4 UCLA, driving in four runs against the Bruins in a game the Wildcats led 9-7 in the sixth inning. Monka then went deep in back-to-back games against Southern Utah and Cal State Fullerton, capping her weekend with a 3-for-4 performance against the Titans. After batting .154 with no extra-base hits in her first collegiate weekend, Monka now is ranked third for NU with a .370 batting average and second with an .889 slugging percentage after her performance in the Desert Classic. Pitcher of the Week: Kim Reeder helped lead the Buckeyes to a five-game sweep of the Easton Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La., over the weekend. The senior pitcher earned three of the team's wins and was named the MVP of the tournament after shutting out No. 21 LSU, and No. 5 Texas A&M, 2-0. Against the Aggies Sunday, Reeder struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits. In four games of action, the Salinas, Calif., native gave up just one run on eight hits for a 0.38 ERA through the weekend. This is the third career weekly laurel for Reeder, who earned her previous two awards in March of 2007 and February of 2008.
