Four Schools Earn Weekly Softball Honors

Player of the Week: Garst claims Big Ten Player of the Week accolades for the first time this season and second in her career after batting .727 last week as Purdue went 3-1. The junior was 8-of-11 from the plate and recorded a hit in all four games, including a 4-for-4 outing against Iowa State in which she was a double short of the cycle and drove in three runs. Successfully stealing base on all five of her attempts, Garst scored five runs and finished with a weekly OPS of 2.150. Last Purdue Player of the Week: Molly Garst (May 3, 2010) Pitcher of the Week: Taylor was 3-0 from the circle, nearly threw a perfect game, and didn't allow an earned run at last week's FAU Kick-Off Classic to clinch her 10th Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honor. In 20.1 innings of work, the senior struck out 33 batters and allowed just five hits, earning wins against Long Island and Massachusetts twice. Her top performance came against Long Island, where she carried a perfect game into the seventh before surrendering a leadoff walk. Last Michigan Pitcher of the Week: Jordan Taylor (Feb. 14, 2011) Co-Freshmen of the Week: The freshman hurler takes home Freshman of the Week honors after throwing two complete game shutouts for Michigan State last weekend. Allowing just one earned run in 15.1 innings pitched, Layne finished the week with a 0.46 ERA and 12 strikeouts, walking just four in the process. She pitched seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Villanova after five scoreless in a 9-0 shortened game against Saint Louis. Last Michigan State Freshman of the Week: N/A
Melissa Rennie, Ohio State C, Wellington, Ohio/Wellington Rennie wins her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolade after slugging 1.778 in three games for Ohio State last week. The freshman backstop hit three home runs and drove in six, finishing the week with a .778 batting average on 7-of-9 hitting. In a come-from behind win against Evansville, Rennie hit two home runs, drove in four and added a stolen base. She also hit a two-run homer against Tennessee-Martin.
