Monka, Taylor Honored With Big Ten Weekly Softball Honors

Monka was named Big Ten Player of the Week after hitting for a .583 average with three home runs and eight runs batted in over the weekend as No. 21 Northwestern went 3-2. Against No. 10 Georgia Tech on Friday, Monka hit her first homer of the weekend and knocked in four runs as she went 3-for-3 from the plate. After recording hits against No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 12 California, the sophomore hit her second home run of the weekend, this time a three-run shot to help the Wildcats to an 8-0 win over UNLV on Saturday. In Sunday’s weekend finale against Utah, Monka homered again and scored two runs in NU’s 10-2 win. The honor is Monka’s first of the season and third in her career.

Pitcher of the Week
Taylor wins her second Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honor this season and fifth in her career. Last weekend, Taylor pitched three games for No. 4 Michigan, earning complete game victories over No. 19 Louisiana State and Oklahoma State and was named Tiger Classic Tournament MVP. In her first appearance against Oklahoma State, Taylor threw the fourth no-hitter of her career while striking out 10 in a 7-0 win. Against LSU on Saturday, She struck out 12 while allowing just three hits in a tight 2-0 victory. In her final outing against Oklahoma State, she allowed four hits but struck out eight batters in an 8-1 Wolverine win. On the weekend, she struck out 30 batters and allowed just one earned run through 21 innings, for an 0.33 earned run average.
