The conference portion of the 2009 Big Ten Softball schedule kicks off this weekend with 10 of the 11 teams in action. The opening slate is highlighted by 14th-ranked Northwestern hosting 8th-ranked Michigan in Evanston at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday and 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Wolverines and the Wildcats shared the Big Ten regular season title last season with identical 18-2 conference records, while Northwestern won the Big Ten Tournament.

Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue and Penn State will all host two-game series this weekend. The Hoosiers welcome Minnesota to Bloomington while Michigan State travels to Columbus to tangle with the No. 17 Buckeyes. Wisconsin heads to West Lafayette for a meeting with the Boilermakers and Penn State opens its 2009 conference slate in Champaign versus the Fighting Illini.

This weekend also marks the first television broadcast of the 2009 Big Ten softball season as the Big Ten Network will air the Michigan at Northwestern games live on Saturday and Sunday beginning with the first pitch of each contest.
