Wisconsin Wins Big Ten Tournament Title With 9-3 Win Over Minnesota

Six different Badgers drove in a run and pitcher Cassandra Darrah allowed just two hits as Wisconsin claimed the 2013 Big Ten Softball Tournament title with a 9-3 victory over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. The fourth-seeded Badgers win their first Big Ten Tournament championship and secure the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, their first appearance in the national event since 2005 and fourth overall.

With the score tied, 2-2, entering the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wisconsin offense exploded for five runs to take a 7-2 lead, one it would not relinquish. Minnesota added a run in the top of the sixth, while Wisconsin added two in the bottom of the frame to complete the scoring. Darrah earned the complete-game win, striking out seven en route to winning Most Outstanding Player honors.

The 2013 NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Minnesota Secures Tournament Final Berth With 1-0 Win Over Nebraska

A pitcher’s duel ended with Minnesota scoring once in the bottom of the sixth inning to send the Gophers to the Big Ten Tournament final with a 1-0 victory over Nebraska on Saturday afternoon. After a single by Paige Palkovich, Minnesota scored the game’s only run after Kari Dorle singled her home. Sara Moulton notched her second straight complete-game victory, this time scattering just four hits while striking out five. The Gophers advance to the tournament final, where they will face Wisconsin to claim the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The game will be televised live by BTN at Noon CT.

A six-run first inning propelled Wisconsin to a 9-3 victory over Michigan on Saturday in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. The Badgers advance to the tournament final to face the winner of Nebraska and Minnesota. Big Ten Tournament semifinal action is underway in Lincoln, Neb., with BTN providing live coverage of both contests. Top-seeded Michigan takes on No. 4 Wisconsin at 2 p.m. CT, while the second semifinal will commence at approximately 4:30 p.m. CT with No. 2 Nebraska facing No. 3 Minnesota.


Nebraska Rallies For 3-2 Victory over Purdue

After trailing for most of the game, Nebraska tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 3-2 victory over Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday night. Entering the sixth down, 2-1, a score that stood following the first inning, the Huskers got RBI singles for Hailey Decker and Mattie Fowler to score the game winning tallies. Tatum Edwards earned the complete-game win, sending Nebraska to the tournament semifinal on Saturday, where it will face Minnesota at approximately 4:30 p.m. CT.

Minnesota Claims 4-0 Decision Over Penn State to Advance to Semifinals

Gopher pitcher Sara Moulton struck out nine and allowed just two hits while facing just one over the minimum as Minnesota defeated Penn State, 4-0, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Minnesota scored twice in the second then added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the scoring. Alex Davis accounted for a pair of RBI for the Gophers, who advance to the tournament semifinals to face the Nebraska-Purdue winner at 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.

Michigan Knocks Off Ohio State, 3-2, To Earn Semifinal Berth

Ashley Lane belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Wolverines withstood a late Ohio State rally to claim a 3-2 victory in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. After tallying a run in the second, Lane gave the Wolverines a 3-0 lead with her home run to right in the fifth. Ohio State would mount a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to cut the lead to 3-2, but Hailey Wagner come in on relief to get the game's final out. Top-seeded Michigan will take on No. 4 Wisconsin in semifinal action on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.

Wisconsin Advances to Semifinals With 3-0 Victory Over Northwestern

Badger pitcher Cassandra Darrah struck out eight batters while scattering just four hits to earn the complete-game victory in Wisconsin's 3-0 win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Badgers posted runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, but Northwestern threatened in the top of the seventh with two on and two out. But Darrah got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the game and send the Badgers into the semifinals, where they will face the Michigan-Ohio State winner at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, which will be televised by BTN.

Four Games On Deck During Friday's Quarterfinals

The quarterfinals of the Big Ten Softball Tournament is scheduled to get underway at 11:30 a.m. CT with the first of four games on tap for Friday. The opening contest will feature fourth-seeded Wisconsin taking on No. 5 Northwestern and will be followed by No. 1 Michigan vs. No. 8 Ohio State, No. 3 Minnesota vs. No. 11 Penn State and No. 2 Nebraska vs. No. 10 Purdue. Purdue Holds on For First-Round Victory Against Michigan State

After racing out to an 8-0 lead, Purdue withstood a late Michigan State rally to claim an 8-5 victory in the final game of the opening day of the Big Ten Softball Tournament. Purdue's Andie Varsho belted a three-run home run in the third before Danielle Fletcher singled home a pair of runs in the fifth. The Boilermakers posted three more runs in the top of the sixth before Michigan State platted five runs in the bottom of the inning, but would get no closer. The Boilermakers head to Friday's quarterfinal, where they will take on host and second-seeded Nebraska in the final game of the day.

Penn State Advances to Quarterfinal Round With Victory Over Illinois

Penn State, entering the tournament as the No. 11 seed, scored two in the first and added two more in the second, setting the table for its 5-2 victory over sixth-seeded Illinois on Thursday afternoon. Macy Jones scattered just six hits in earning the complete-game victory and also drove in Penn State's first run of the game. With the scored tied, 2-2, in the top of the second, Penn State's Kailyn Johnson tripled home two runs for the clinching scores. Cassidy Bell added an insurance home run in the top of the seventh as the Nittany Lions advanced to face third-seeded Minnesota on Friday afternoon.

Big Fifth Inning Lifts Ohio State Over Iowa

A six-run fifth inning propelled No. 8 Ohio State to a come-from-behind victory over ninth-seeded Iowa, 8-4, in the second game of the Big Ten Softball Tournament on Thursday. The Buckeyes entered the bottom of the fifth down 4-1, but quickly loaded the bases with one away. After two walks cut the lead to 4-3, a grand slam by Shelby Pickett gave the Buckeyes the lead it would not relinquish. The victory sends Ohio State to the quarterfinals, where it will meet top-seeded Michigan at approximately 2 p.m. on Friday.

Northwestern Defeats Indiana in Opening Round

The Northwestern offense combined for three home runs, part of an 11-hit effort as the fifth-seeded Wildcats defeated No. 12 Indiana, 6-3, in the opening game of the conference tournament on Thursday. Marisa Bast drove in two runs as Northwestern raced out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. The Hoosiers had the bases loaded with two away in the bottom of the seventh, but Northwestern's Amy Letourneau got out of the jam to send the Wildcats into a quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Wisconsin on Friday.

First pitch at the 2013 Big Ten Softball Tournament is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT Thursday when fifth-seeded Northwestern takes on No. 12 Indiana.
