Six Big Ten Teams Selected to Participate in NCAA Softball Championship

Six Big Ten teams were selected to participate in the 2009 NCAA Softball Championship: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State and Purdue. Michigan and Ohio State were both chosen as host sites in the double-elimination regional championship. NCAA Championship play will start on Thursday, May 14 with No. 11 Ohio State hosting Canisius. The winner of that game will meet the victor of BYU and Kentucky on Saturday in Columbus. The remaining five Big Ten squads begin action on Friday, May 15. No. 5 Michigan will host Miami (OH) in the Ann Arbor Regional. Purdue travels to the Louisville Regional and will meet the Cardinals. No. 12 Northwestern will head south to Waco, Texas, and will face off against Texas State. Iowa travels to the southeast for the Atlanta Regional where they will meet Auburn in the opening round. Illinois will cross the state border to Columbia, Missouri, for the Columbia Regional where the Fighting Illini will take on Missouri.
