Seven Big Ten Softball Standouts Claim Academic All-District Laurels

May 17, 2005

Seven Big Ten softball student-athletes were selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams on Thursday in three different districts. To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.

Iowa's Stacy May claimed First Team All-District VII honors and Ohio State's Ashley Cutcliff was a First Team selection on the District IV squad. Northwestern's Garland Cooper and Erin Mobley were joined by Minnesota's Megan Higgenbotham as First Team selections on the District V squad, while Minnesota's Valerie Alston and Lyn Peyer claimed Second Team accolades. Those student-athletes named to the Academic All-District First Team will now appear on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Team. That squad will be selected based upon a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Committee with the team scheduled to be announced on June 2.
