Big Ten Teams Set to Compete in NCAA Regional Round

Three Big Ten softball teams open play in the 2011 NCAA Championship regional round, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday. Michigan and Penn State will both host during the regional round, while Indiana is on the road at the Columbia Regional.

The tenth-seeded Wolverines, led by Big Ten Player of the Year Amanda Chidester and Coach of the Year Carol Hutchins, face Western Kentucky in Game 1. Notre Dame and Kentucky also take part in the Ann Arbor Regional, with each game being televised live on ESPN.

Penn State hosts the University Park Regional and opens with Fordham on Friday, while No. 13 Oregon and Albany also square off on the regional’s opening day. Sunday’s games will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Indiana and Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Morgan Melloh face DePaul in their first game of the Columbia Regional. Host and fifth-seeded Missouri takes on Illinois State to round out the opening games at the regional site.
