Michigan Concludes Season With 2-1 Heartbreaker to Kentucky

Michigan held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Kentucky scored twice to claim a 2-1 victory in the Ann Arbor Regional Final. The Wolverines end their season with a 53-6 record.

Jordan Taylor went the distance for Michigan, surrendering just five hits to the Wildcats’ offense. Offensively for Michigan, Ashley Lane produced the lone hit of the day for the Wolverines, while Jaclyn Crummey scored an unearned run to give Michigan a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Penn State’s Season Comes to an End with 3-1 Loss to Oregon

Oregon scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure a 3-1 victory over Penn State on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Nittany Lions’ season comes to an end with a 31-24-1 record.

Penn State scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the third. Starting pitcher Lisa Akamine singled through the right side to score Mary Ostman to give PSU a 1-0 lead. They would hold that lead until the top of the sixth when Oregon would plate three runs to advance to the Super Regional.

Penn State, Michigan Eye Super Regional Berth on Sunday
 

 

Michigan and Penn State eye a Super Regional berth today, each needing a win over their respective opponents to advance to the next round. Penn State will open action against 13th-seeded Oregon beginning at Noon ET on the Big Ten Network, while Michigan needs two wins against Kentucky with first pitch today coming at 1 p.m. on ESPN.

Penn State Outlasts Fordham, 5-2, in 16-inning Affair

Penn State's Jackie Hill pitched 11.2 innings in relief and allowed just three hits, while starter Lisa Akamine doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the 16th to send the Nittany Lions to a 5-2 victory over Fordham in 16 innings on Saturday night. Penn State will face Oregon on Sunday and will need two wins over the Ducks to advance to the Super Regional. Sunday's games will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.

Freshman Alyssa Sovereign knocked in Penn State's first two runs, blasting a two-run shot to left in the second inning.

Michigan Gets Its Comeback This Time, Scores 9-8 Win Over Notre Dame

After its first comeback attempt fell short earlier Saturday, Michigan used a six-run sixth inning to claim a 9-8 win over Notre Dame on Saturday night and advance to Sunday's action. The Wolverines will need to defeat Kentucky twice on Sunday to advance to Super Regional competition. First pitch in Game 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Down 8-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, Michigan scored six times to surge ahead. Marley Powers knocked in Dorian Shaw for the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth, while teammate Ashley Lane finished the game with three RBI.

Penn State Extends Tournament Run, Knocks off Albany 6-1

Penn State defeated Albany, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon, extending its NCAA Tournament run. The Nittany Lions take part in a second elimination game on Saturday night when they face Fordham at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Jackie Hill allowed just four hits in going the distance for Penn State, while Cassidy Bell and Alyssa Sovereign each drove in two runs apiece. The NIttany Lions will face Fordham for the second time in as many days, coming off a 2-0 loss to Fordham on Friday night.

Michigan Comeback Effort Falls Short in 7-6 Loss to Kentucky; To Play Again at 5 p.m. ET

A five-run seventh inning wasn't enough as Michigan fell short in a 7-6 contest to Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines are now 1-1 in pool play and will face the Notre Dame-Western Kentucky winner in an elimination game at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Ashley Lane led the charge for the Wolverines, belting a grand slam as part of the five-run fifth inning. Teammate Lyndsey Doyle was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Hoosiers Fall to DePaul, 2-1, Play Again at 4 p.m. ET

Indiana took a 1-0 lead after the second inning, but DePaul rallied to score once in the third and another in the seventh for a 2-1 Blue Demon win. Indiana's Morgan Melloh went the distance, surrendering just one earned run while striking out 11. She also scored the Hoosiers' run.

The Hoosiers look to stave off elimination when they take on the Missouri-Illinois State loser at approximately 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Conference Teams Continue Action in NCAA Tournament on Saturday

Michigan and Penn State move into their second day of NCAA Regional action while Indiana will open tournament play Saturday morning. On Friday, Michigan defeated Western Michigan, 5-0, Penn State fell to Fordham 2-0 and Indiana will begin action at the Columbia Regional at 11 a.m. ET against DePaul.

Michigan Claims 5-0 Win Over Western Michigan in NCAA Tournament Opener

Marley Powers scored two runs and had two RBI, while ace Jordan Taylor allowed just three hits, to help Michigan score a 5-0 victory over Western Michigan on Friday night. The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, added two runs in the sixth, and saw Taylor strikeout 13 WMU hitters to earn the win.

In its second game of the regional, Michigan will face Kentucky at Noon ET. A win there would send Michigan into Sunday needing just one additional victory to earn a Super Regional berth.

Penn State Drops 2-0 Decision to Fordham to Open NCAA Tournament Play

A pitcher's duel between Penn State and Fordham ended with Fordham earning a 2-0 win over the Nittany Lions on Friday night. Jackie Hill pitched through six scoreless innings, but allowed a two-run home run in the top of the seventh that proved to be the decisive runs.

Penn State will look to avoid elimination on Saturday when it faces Albany at 5 p.m. ET. A win there would send Penn State into a second elimination game against the Fordham-Oregon loser at 7:30 p.m.

Indiana-DePaul Contest Moved to 11 a.m. ET Saturday

Rain forced the postponement of Indiana's opening game of the 2011 NCAA Championship with DePaul. The game will now be played at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday. An updated schedule of games can be found at the Columbia Regional Championship Central Page.


Big Ten Softball Teams Begin March to Women's College World Series Tonight

Three Big Ten softball teams open NCAA Championship action tonight as Indiana, Michigan and Penn State begin their march to the Women's College World Series. Regional action gets underway tonight with Indiana facing DePaul at 5 p.m. ET in the Columbia Regional, Penn State opens with Fordham at 5 p.m. in the University Park Regional, and Michigan hosts Western Michigan at 8 p.m. in the Ann Arbor Regional.
