After earning its eighth regional championship in the last nine years, Michigan advances to the Tuscaloosa Super Regional this week to take on host and No. 2 overall seed Alabama. The best of three series winner will advance as one of eight participants in the 2012 Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Michigan has faced Alabama 11 times in program history, holding a 7-4 all-time mark.
Last weekend, Michigan won all three of its games in the Louisville Regional to earn its spot in the Super Regional. Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Haylie Wagner won all three games in the circle for the Wolverines, who won their first two games of the regional in walk-off fashion. In Friday’s win over Kentucky, Sara Driesenga drove in two runs with a game-winning double, while Caitlin Blanchard recorded the final RBI in Saturday’s win over Louisville by way of a bases loaded hit by pitch. Michigan capped the regional with a 4-0 victory over the No. 15 Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
The Michigan-Alabama series will help kickoff the Super Regional round, with Game 1 of the set slated for 8 p.m. ET with televised coverage from ESPN2. Games 2 and 3 of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional are set for Friday afternoon, with coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m.
