The conference office announced on Tuesday the 13th weekly women’s swimming and diving awards for meets from Jan. 4-10. Northwestern’s Kassia Shishkoff was named Swimmer of the Week and Ohio State’s Chelsea Davis picked up the weekly diving award.
Women’s Swimmer of the Week:
Kassia Shishkoff, Northwestern
Sr. - Raleigh, N.C. - St. David's School
Kassia Shishkoff almost single-handedly engineered Northwestern's come-from-behind win at Notre Dame on Saturday. The senior won all three of her races, nabbing victories in three of the last four swimming events in the entire meet to give the Wildcats a six-point win over the Fighting Irish, who entered the meet receiving votes in the most recent CSCAA Top-25 poll. Shishkoff began her day with an NCAA provisional time of 1:48.87 to win the 200 free, matching her season-best effort in the event. With Northwestern tailing heavily late in the day, Shishkoff next won the 500 free by more than seven seconds with a mark of 4:53.58. She then led a Wildcat sweep of the top four spots in the 400 individual medley with a 2.5 second margin of victory. Shishkoff capped the day by anchoring the winning 400 free relay to complete the comeback. This is the fourth career weekly award for Shishkoff, who becomes NU’s third swimmer to capture the award this season.
Last Northwestern Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Jenn Kocsis (Dec. 22, 2009)
Women’s Diver of the Week:
Chelsea Davis, Ohio State
Sr. - Columbus, Ohio - Worthington Kilbourne
Senior diver Chelsea Davis led a one-two Ohio State finish on both the one- and three-meter springboard events to lead the 30th-ranked Buckeyes to a pair of wins over Toledo and Wright State last week. The Columbus, Ohio, native posted four top-two finishes, including three individual wins in back-to-back days of competition to help OSU improve to 4-0 on the season. Against the Rockets, Davis claimed top honors on both springboards, posting NCAA qualifying marks in each with a 318.6 score in the one-meter competition and a 337.3 mark in the three-meter event. She followed that performance with a 329.03 effort on the lower springboard against the Raiders before earning runner-up honors in the three-meter competition where she bested her previous mark from the day before by a full 38 points (375.45). This marks the seventh Big Ten Diver of the Week award for Davis, who earned her first three during her freshman campaign in 2005-06 while competing for Northwestern.
