Big Ten Announces Swimmer and Diver of the Week

The conference office announced on Tuesday the 17th weekly women’s swimming and diving awards for meets from February 1-7. Minnesota’s Melissa Nelson and Indiana’s Amy Korthauer were tabbed Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively.

Swimmer of the Week:
Melissa Nelson, Minnesota
So. - Maple Grove, Minn. - Maple Grove

Melissa Nelson dominated the Minnesota Challenge, posting top-finishes in each of her eight events over the course of the two-day competition. Nelson swam a personal best in the 50 free (23.67), the 100 back (56.23) and the 100 free (51.68), along with winning the 100 fly with a time of 56.28. She also was a part of the winning 200 and 400 free relays as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays.

Diver of the Week:
Amy Korthauer, Indiana
Sr. - Naperville, Ill. - Naperville Central

Amy Korthauer will represent the United States at the 2010 World Cup after her second-place finish on the platform at the USA Diving Winter National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Korthauer tallied 355.40 points in Saturday's final and that score was added to her semifinal total of 321.95 for a score of 677.35. She was trailing Katie Bell by 8/10ths of a point heading into the final but outscored Bell by 5.7 points in the final to secure her spot. The FINA World Cup is the premier international diving event in this non-Olympic year.
