Minnesota jumped out to an early lead at the 2009 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. After the first day of events, the Gophers totaled 72 team points followed closely by Indiana with 68. Michigan scored 60 points, sitting in third place with Penn State in fourth with 58 total points.
Wisconsin claimed the first event of the Championships in the 200-yard medley relay, touching the wall at 1:36.29. Minnesota won the second and final event of the evening in the 800 freestyle, posting a time of 7:01.65.
The Big Ten Championships continue tomorrow as preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. and will run to 1 p.m. The diving finals will follow at 1 p.m. and the final swimming heats will start at 6:30 p.m.
