Northwestern Women Take On Notre Dame In NCAA Regional Final

Ohio State and Michigan Fall, Northwestern Meets Notre Dame in NCAA Second Round FIRST ROUND Wildcats Put Out Flames, 4-0 The tenth seed Northwestern dropped the University of Illinois-Chicago from the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament with their 4-0 sweep, Saturday, in Evanston. With the win, the 'Cats extend their dual match winning streak to 11. Jessica Rusch contributed victories at No. 2 doubles and singles for Northwestern. "UIC played us hard--the match was tighter than the score reflects," said head coach Claire Pollard. "But we are happy to move on and play Notre Dame again." Northwestern meets Notre Dame in Sunday's regional final, with a trip to Athens, Georgia and the sweet sixteen on the line. The two teams met back in April, with Northwestern edging the Irish, 4-3. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SECOND ROUND Bucks Swept by Kentucky in Second Round Ohio State ended its season in the NCAA tournament regional final Saturday, falling 4-0 to No. 17 Kentucky. OSU finishes the 2004 campaign with an even, 14-14, record. The Bucks ended the regular season in second place in the Conference standings after winning six of their last eight matches, including three straight in the Big Ten tournament. Saturday's match in the national team tournament marked the program's sixth consecutive appearance, and seventh overall.

After sweeping Denver in the first round, Michigan fell to undefeated Stanford, 4-0, in Saturday's NCAA tournament second round. With the win, the Cardinal remain undefeated on the year, while the Wolverines end their season, 17-7.
Stanford clinched the doubles point when the No. 1 ranked team of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette defeated Michigan's Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata, 8-4. In the singles competition, Stanford clinched three straight victories at first, fifth, and sixth singles to secure the win. Each of Stanford's six singles players in ranked in the nation's top-60. |
