Sugiyama Earns Player of the Week Accolades

Complete Release in PDF Format Chisako Sugiyama, Michigan Sugiyama played an instrumental role in Michigan's biggest victory in several seasons, a 4-3 upset over No. 12-ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday (Jan. 27). Her 6-4, 6-0 win over No. 57-ranked Taka Bertrand gave the Wolverines a 3-1 lead in the match and improved her 2006-07 record to a team-best 13-3. Sugiyama's win over Bertrand was her fourth career triumph over a nationally-ranked opponent and her first-ever victory at the No. 2 position. Sugiyama, a winner of four straight singles matches, ranks first on Michigan's alltime singles winning percentage chart at .755 (40-13). She was also a doubles victor against Vanderbilt on Saturday, teaming with Kara Delicata for a close 8-7(3) win over Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor at No. 1. It was Sugiyama's first career match at the top doubles spot, and the victory improved her overall doubles record in 2006-07 to 9-5.
