Rika Tatsuno Garners Weekly Honor
Feb. 10, 2009
Rika Tatsuno earns her first career weekly laurel on the heels of a spectacular performance last weekend when she posted a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles, including one upset over a ranked competitor. Tatsuno began the week with an impressive 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Notre Dame's No. 39-ranked Kristy Frilling at No. 2 singles. She then teamed up with Whitney Taney for U-M's lone doubles win against the Fighting Irish, earning an 8-5 decision over Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik at No. 2 doubles. With the wins, Tatsuno helped her squad to a near upset over its No. 14-ranked Big East foe. Tatsuno then continued her winning ways on Sunday when she aided the No. 18-ranked Wolverines to a decisive 7-0 victory over Yale, helping her team extend its home winning streak to 20 matches. In No. 2 doubles play, Tatsuno once again paired up with Taney to claim an 8-1 triumph over Vicky Brook and Stevi Petrell. With the win, the pair improved their record to a team-best 4-1 in dual match play this season. The Wolverine sophomore then put together a near-flawless performance in her career debut at No. 1 singles, defeating Yale's Janet Kim in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to give the Wolverines an early 2-0 advantage. Tatsuno holds a team-best 13-5 overall singles record in 2008-09.
