Northwestern Becomes First Big Ten Team to Capture ITA National Indoor Title
Feb. 16, 2009
The top-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team became the first Big Ten squad to capture the elusive Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Women's Team Indoor title with a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Georgia at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis., on Monday. In only its 11th appearance in the tournament, Northwestern became just the sixth school overall to win the ITA Team Championship in the 22-year history of the event. Ten of the tournament's previous 21 winners went on to capture the NCAA championship in the same season. With its 4-0 mark, the Wildcats improve to 7-0 on the season and pushed its all-time dual record in the event to 23-12. "This year being ranked No. 1, we have not really done anything to prove it yet," said 11th-year head coach Claire Pollard, the 2008 ITA Coach of the Year. "We needed to go out and be hungry for success and prove that we are No. 1. Georgia is a great team and we are fortunate to come out on top."
