Big Ten Selects Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Michigan's Chisako Sugiyama earns this week's honor

	Sugiyama earns her third career weekly honor and first of 2008 after notching wins against nationally ranked opponents in both singles and doubles.

Sugiyama put together a successful weekend against nationally ranked opponents to earn her third career weekly accolade and the first of 2008. Sugiyama teamed with sophomore Tania Mahtani to knock off Tennessee's No. 26-ranked duo of Rosalia Alda and Ghizela Shcute, 8-3, to open the weekend at No. 1 doubles and help Michigan to a 4-3 win over the Volunteers. In Sunday's match against No. 2 Northwestern, the junior teamed with Mahtani once again to take down the No. 7 team of Lauren Lui and Smanantha Murray, 8-6. She followed that win with a convincing victory at No. 1 singles over No. 9 Georgia Rose in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Sugiyama leads the Wolverines in singles wins with 10 on the year, while she and Mahtani lead all Michigan doubles teams with seven victories this season.
