Ohio State’s Kirsten Flower garners her first career weekly laurel after leading the 37-ranked Buckeyes to a 6-1 victory over conference rival Penn State in their Big Ten opener last week. Flower began competition by teaming up with Paloma Escobed to sweep Lauren McCarthy and Denisa Zobeideh, 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. The win helped Ohio State clinch the doubles point – the third consecutive match the Buckeyes have accomplished the feat.  The junior Buckeye did not relent in singles action, locking up OSU’s premier Big Ten win of the season at the top spot, defeating Monika Mical in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Flower has added consistency to the top of the Buckeye singles lineup in 2009, running off a 7-4 record at No. 1. She has picked up five singles wins in a row, including four over ranked opponents.
