Fr. - Moscow, Russia - No. 1290
Elena Ivanova earns her first weekly laurel after propelling Michigan State to its first conference victory of the season over Wisconsin with two victories in singles and doubles play on Sunday. The Spartan freshman teamed up with Stephanie Kebler to defeat the 35th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation in Wisconsin’s Elizabeth Carpenter and Angela Chupa. Ivanova then clinched the five-hour, 4-3 victory for Michigan State when she defeated Aleksandra Markovic, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, to garner her first singles victory at the No. 2 spot. The Moscow, Russia native is now 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play with Kebler, winning their last four matches together, and she currently leads the team with 10 wins during spring play. The award marks the first-ever weekly honor for Ivanova, and the first weekly laurel for the Spartans since February of 2007.
