Sammons claims her first Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor after a pair of wins at No. 1 singles this past weekend, including a victory against a top-20 opponent. The senior opened the weekend on Saturday with a three-set win over 20th-ranked Denise Muresan of No. 4 Michigan, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Her Sunday performances led Purdue to a victory against Michigan State, its 15th of the season and the second-highest total in program history. Sammons defeated Michaela Silesova, 6-4, 6-2, then teamed with Jennifer Rabot to defeat Nicole Herzog and Whitney Wilson, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. The duo recorded its 24th win of the season, setting the program’s single-season record for doubles victories.
