Three teams are set to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round of the 2009 Big Ten Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament after winning opening round matches on Thursday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. Sixth seed Purdue, No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 8 Minnesota survived day one of the conference tournament and will look to resume competition tomorrow.
Minnesota defeated No. 9 Iowa, 4-0 to advance to the second round. The Gophers will face the No. 1 team in the country, Northwestern on Friday at 10 a.m. (CT) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Purdue overpowered No. 11 Michigan State, 4-2 and will look to play No. 3 Illinois at McKee Farms in Fitchburg, Wis., at 2 p.m. on Friday.
In the final match of the day, Big Ten Tournament host Wisconsin downed No. 10 Iowa, 4-2, nabbing the last open slot in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Badgers prepare to meet second-seed Michigan in an afternoon match, slated for a 2 p.m. (ET) start.
Ohio State earned a No. 4 seed in this year’s tournament and will look to face No. 5 Indiana in Friday’s fourth match at 10 a.m. CT.
