No. 6 Purdue Makes Quick Work of No. 11 Wisconsin, 4-0
April 26, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Purdue claimed a strong 4-0 decision over Wisconsin in Thursday's second quarterfinal game of the Big Ten Championships. The regular season matchup between the No. 11 seeded Badgers and No. 6 Boilermakers featured a healthy Caitlin Burke and a Wisconsin near win, however neither Burke nor her teammates could slow down the Boilermakers today. Wisconsin started the afternoon by taking the first doubles match from the Boilermakers, with Chelsea Nusslock and Kim Roberts coming through with an 8-6 win over Alejandra Boeker and Anna Dzeva at No. 3. But Purdue's #57 Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker avenged a regular season loss to #56 Burke and Elizabeth Carpenter and teammates Cigdem Duru and Neela Vaez were able to hold off Wisconsin's Nicole Beck and Kaylan Caiati to win the decisive set 8-5 at the No. 2 position. The crux of Wisconsin's troubles came when Beier made quick work of Caiati (6-1, 6-2) at No. 2 while Duru exacted similar results on Nusslock, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the fourth singles position. Dzeva cruised past Morgan Tuttle at No. 5, 7-5, 6-2 to seal the win for the Boilermakers. The showdown between Voelker and Burke at No. 1 was abandoned due to Purdue's quick work. Voelker won the first set 7-5, but was down 3-2 in the second.
