April 26, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -With home court advantage behind them, the Minnesota Golden Gophers shut out Illinois 4-0 to solidify a spot in day two of the Big Ten tournament. With quick work of the doubles point, the Gophers effort came in to fruition when they swept the next three singles matches in straight sets.

Doubles action was highlighted by a succession of back and forth games traded at No. 2 doubles by Minnesota's Ida Malmberg and Danielle Mousseau and Illini Shivani Dave and Alejandra Meza Cuadra. But their efforts were abandoned when Lindsay Risebrough and Ashley Schellhas beat Megan Fudge and Emily Wang, 8-2. Gopher teammates Karina Chiarelli and Tijana Koprivica soon followed, clinching the doubles point for Minnesota at the third position.

Minnesota received the necessary points in its first three completed singles matches starting with Karina Chiarelli at the No. 5 spot and followed closely by Tijana Koprivica who took down Momei Qu 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Risebrough sealed the win for the Gophers by defeating Kristina Minor 7-5, 6-2.

With the win, Minnesota continues Friday at 2:00 p.m. against No. 2 Indiana.
