April 27, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn -Two years ago a seventh-seeded Wolverine team crashed through the tournament and into the final match before succumbing to Northwestern. Last year, Michigan once again made an appearance in the championship game after a dramatic 4-3 semi-final victory over Iowa. Teams have learned not to count these fiesty Wolverines out even if they do sit at a three seed. In a 4-0 quarterfinal victory over Purdue this afternoon, the Wolverines are well on their way to storming through the bracket once again.

Michigan took a 1-0 advantage going to singles play by clinching the doubles point with scores of 8-3 at No. 3, and 8-5 at No. 1. The Wolverine tandem of Jenny Kuehn and Chisako Sugiyama, who have the second best doubles record (10-2) in the Big Ten, sealed Purdue's fate by knocking of #57 Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker at No. 1.

The Maize and Blue continued to barnstorm through the competition in singles action, getting the necessary points in the first three completed matches. At No. 4, Tania Mahtani dominated Cigdem Duru 6-1, 6-0 and senior Kara Delicata beat Neela Vaez 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot. At No. 6, Allie Shafner sealed the win for the Wolverines by defeating Alejandra Boeker 6-3, 6-4.

The Wolverine victory sets up a showdown with the Indiana vs. Minnesota match still in progress.
