The Michigan Wolverines became the final team to advance out of the first round, by defeating the host Michigan State Spartans 4-1.

East Lansing, Mich.--Due to sub-standard temperatures, the first two matches of the 2005 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship were moved indoors to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Due to the change in venue, the order in which singles matches are to be played will be determined by a draw following the regular conclusion of the three doubles matches. The two singles matches not initially selected will begin play, when needed, as courts become available.

The seventh-seeded Michigan Wolverines opened up their match with No. 10 seed Michigan State by taking the doubles point in the first match of the championship played outdoors.  Wolverines Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata defeated Keri Thompson and Christine Bader, 8-2 at first doubles and Elizabeth Exon and Debra Steifler beat Spartans Jessica Baron and Karen Gustafson 8-1 at third.  Leanne Rutherford and Allie Shafner were up 6-3 over Sara Andrews and Pascale Schritzer at the second spot when the match was abandoned.

The sixth singles match finished first with Michigan's Nina Yaftali defeating Shelley Brady 6-3, 6-1.  Michigan State got on the board when Jessica Baren upended Wolverine Leanne Rutherford, 6-0, 6-1.  However, the firepower of the Maize and Blue was too much, winning the first and second singles matches 6-2, 6-4.  Michelle DaCosta and Elizabeth Exon earned the victories respectively.  The Wolverines will face-off with the Indiana Hoosiers at 2:00pm on Friday.
