East Lansing, Mich.--Due to sub-standard temperatures, the first two matches of the 2005 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship were moved indoors to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Due to the change in venue, the order in which singles matches are to be played will be determined by a draw following the regular conclusion of the three doubles matches. The two singles matches not initially selected will begin play, when needed, as courts become available.
The 11th-seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers squared off against sixth seed Purdue Thursday morning's opening round. The Boilers earned the doubles point on the strength of a third-spot comeback. After being down 4-1, the Purdue team of Stephanie Wooten and Amy Walgenbach came back to take their match 8-6 over Minnesota's Nischela Reddy and Marina Bugaenco. The two teams had split the first two doubles matches, Minnesota's pair of Jane Anderson and Ida Malmberg taking the first 8-5, and Purdue's Brooke Beier and Hala Sufi winning 8-2.
The third through sixth singles matches were randomly selected to compete first. The third singles match was the first to conclude with Purdue's Shawna Zuccasini defeating Gopher Lindsay Risebrough 6-1, 6-4. At fifth singles, Minnesota's Danielle Mousseau lost to Walgenbach 6-3, 6-3, and to clinch the victory for the Boilermakers, Lara Burgarello defeated Minnesota's Marina Bugaenco 6-4, 6-2. All other matches were, by rule, abandoned. With the 4-0 win, Purdue will advance to face the championship's third seed, the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday 2:00 pm.
The Boilermakers next face the third-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes. All match times are subject to change based on weather. Log onto BigTen.org throughout the 2005 Women's Tennis Championship for up-to-date scores, updates, and results.
