Northwestern Wins Big Ten Tournament With 4-0 Win Over Michigan
The No. 2 Northwestern Wildcats won their 12th-straight Big Ten Tournament championship with a 4-0 win over top-seeded Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament at the University of Iowa. The Wildcats jumped to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, then wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 singles clinched the tournament title for Northwestern, who earns the Big Ten's automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
Northwestern Defeats Illinois, 4-2; Advances to Sunday's Tournament Final
Winners of the last 11 Big Ten Tournaments, the second-seeded Northwestern Wildcats will try for 12 in a row after a 4-2 win over Illinois in Saturday's semifinals. With a 1-0 lead following doubles, Northwestern won the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead. The Illini closed to gap to 3-2 with two straight wins, but Maria Mosolova's win at No. 1 singles gave Northwestern a berth into the tournament final.
Northwestern will face top-seeded Michigan at Noon CT for the Big Ten Tournament championship.
Michigan Rallies Against Iowa to Clinch Spot in Tournament Final
After dropping the doubles point, top-seeded Michigan rallied to win the first four singles matches and defeat No. 4 seed Iowa, 4-1. The Wolverines, with wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles, move on to the tournament final where they will face the winner of No. 2 Northwestern and No. 3 Illinois. Michigan's Whitney Taney clinched match-point at No. 2 singles.
Northwestern and Illinois battle in the second semifinal, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
Northwestern Outlasts Ohio State to Advance To Semifinals
No. 2 Northwestern needed three games to earn the doubles point, then won three of four in singles to defeat No. 7 Ohio State, 4-1. The Wildcats advance to Saturday's afternoon semifinal and face No. 3 Illinois at 2 p.m. CT. Kate Turvy at No. 4 singles clinched the decisive point for the Wildcats, needing three sets to defeat Buckeye Gabby Steele.
In Saturday's morning semifinal, No. 1 Michigan will face No. 4 Iowa at 10 a.m. CT. Sunday's tournament final will be contested at Noon.
No. 3 Illinois Rallies To Defeat No. 6 Purdue, 4-2
After dropping the doubles point, the third-seeded Illini rallied to win four of the five singles contests as Illinois got past No. 6 Purdue, 4-2, to advance into Saturday's semifinals. Falling behind 2-1 after two singles decisions, Illinois won the next three, clinched at No. 5 singles by Chelcie Abajian. With wins at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6, Illinois moved into the semifinals where it will face No. 2 seed Northwestern.
Michigan Advances to Face Iowa in Semifinals
The top seeded Michigan Wolverines battled to a tough 4-1 win against No. 8 Wisconsin on Friday to advance in the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and later led 2-1 after a Michigan win at No. 2 singles and a Wisconsin victory at No. 3. Michigan's Rika Tatsuno and Michelle Sulahian needed to rally from one set down, but the two came back to give the Wolverines the 4-1 win.
Michigan will face Iowa in Saturday morning's semifinal. Later today, No. 3 Illinois will face No. 6 Purdue and No. 2 Northwestern battles No. 7 Ohio State.
Iowa Wins Quarterfinal Matchup to Advance to Saturday's Semifinals.
In Friday morning's quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Iowa defeated fifth-ranked Indiana 4-1 to advance to Saturday's semifinal. The Hawkeyes got out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, then won three of the four completed singles matches to move on in the tournament. Iowa's Alexis Dorr clinched the match at No. 6 singles, defeating Myriam Sopel, 6-1, 7-6.
Iowa will face the winner of No. 1 Michigan and No. 8 Wisconsin in Saturday's semifinals.
Ohio State Moves Into Friday Quarterfinals With 4-0 Win Over Michigan State
Ohio State will face No. 2 seed Northwestern in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament after a 4-0 win over No. 10 Michigan State on Thursday afternoon. The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead after doubles, then wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 singles gave Ohio State a berth in the quarterfinals.
Matches will begin at 10 a.m. CT Friday with No. 1 Michigan facing No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 4 Iowa taking on No. 5 Indiana. At 2 p.m. CT, No. 3 Illinois will face No. 6 Purdue and No. 2 Northwestern challenges No. 7 Ohio State.
Purdue Advances Past Penn State, 4-0
After winning the doubles point, No. 6 Purdue had three straight sets singles victories, earning a 4-0 win over No. 11 Penn State in the second match of the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. Boilermaker Imogen Golder sealed the win for Purdue at No. 5 singles, defeating Sarah Henderson, 7-5, 6-4, setting the Boilermakers up with a quarterfinal date with No. 3 Illinois on Friday afternoon.
No. 7 Ohio State faces No. 10 Michigan State in the final match of the day in Iowa City.
Wisconsin Advances To Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals
In the opening round matchup of the 2010 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament, No. 8 Wisconsin defeated No. 9 Minnesota, 4-0, to advance to Friday's quarterfinal against No. 1 Michigan. Badger Jessica Seyferth won the match-clinching point at No. 5 singles, defeating Doron Muravnik, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
The second matchup of the day features No. 6 Purdue taking on No. 11 Penn State.

Action has begun at 2010 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Eighth-seeded Wisconsin and No. 9 Minnesota are underway in the first match of the tournament, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Michigan in Friday's quarterfinals.
