Top-seeded Northwestern bested No. 72 Miami (Ohio) Friday afternoon in front of a home crowd at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center to advance to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Championships. With the win, the Wildcats have now recorded eight consecutive shutouts and improve to 26-1 on the season.
Earlier that morning, No. 37 Ohio State dropped its first round match in a 4-0 loss to No. 26 Kentucky in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes end their season with a 15-11 overall record, including a 7-3 conference ledger.
Northwestern moves on to face Kentucky tomorrow in a Wildcat showdown with a trip to the Round of 16 on the line.
Michigan defeated No. 58 Sacramento State, 4-2, in first round action on the campus of the University of Notre Dame on Friday morning. The No. 17-ranked Wolverines will face the Fighting Irish in Saturday’s second round, slated for a 1 p.m. (ET) start time. With the win over the Hornets, U-M improves to 18-6 on the season.
No. 34-ranked Illinois is set to host No. 19 Vanderbilt in first round action on Saturday at 1 p.m. (ET) at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. This is only the first time in program history that the Fighting Illini have been selected to host the first and second rounds.
