The top-seeded Northwestern women’s tennis team punched its ticket to the NCAA round of 16 in College Station, Texas, on Saturday with a 4-1 win over No. 26 Kentucky at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. Senior Keri Robison clinched the winning point for the Wildcats who earned their sixth consecutive berth to the national tournament’s round of 16. Northwestern improved to 27-1 on the season and will take to the court again on Friday, May 15.
The only Big Ten squad to enter tournament play on Saturday, the No. 34-ranked Illini advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships with a nail biting 4-3 win over the No. 19 Vanderbilt Commodores this afternoon at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. With the win, Illinois upped its record to 19-7 overall. The Illini will play host to No. 16 Fresno State in second-round action on Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET). The winner of that match will emerge from the regional bracket and face Northwestern in the round of 16.
No. 17 Michigan ended their NCAA Championship run with a 4-1 loss to fifth-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines end the 2009 campaign with a 18-7 slate, including a 9-1 conference ledger.
