The NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships have begun in Urbana, Ill. Four Big Ten singles players and six conference doubles pairs began play in the national tournament with singles action beginning today and doubles starting on Thursday.
Michigan's Emina Bektas opened the first-round slate, falling to Santa Clara's Katie Le in a closely contested match (7-6 , 7-5). Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt, a top-16 seed, is underway against UNLV's Aleksandra Josifoska this morning. At 1:30 p.m., Northwestern's Kate Turvy looks to knock off No. 6 seed Lauren Herring of Georgia, while the Wolverines' Ronit Yurovsky takes on Nini Lagvilava of Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
In the doubles draw, Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton take on No. 2 seed Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC, while Purdue's Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt face Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama, a top-eight seed. Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova, the No. 3 seed, battle Georgia State's Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah, while the Penn State duo of Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting meet Kansas State's Karla Bonacic and Petra Niedemayerova in the opening round. Illinois' Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White look to take down South Carolina's Jaklin Alawi and Dominike Kanakova on their home court, while Bektas and Brooke Bolender, a top-eight seed, face Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton of UCLA.
