ATHENS, Ga. - In first-round action at the 2005 NCAA Singles Championships, third-seeded Audra Cohen of Northwestern escaped unscathed, winning handily in straight sets against Dea Sumantri of Washington, 6-1, 6-2.  However, teammate Cristelle Grier was eliminated from the tournament after dropping a heartbreaking 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss to Virginia Commonwealth's Marianna Yuferova.  MORE>>>

Illinois' Cynthya Goulet dropped her first round match Monday to Wake Forest's Karin Coetzee.  The 33rd-ranked Demon Deacon defeated No. 39 Goulet, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.  The loss was Goulet's first since April 17, when she fell to third-ranked Cohen. Goulet had won 20 of her previous 22 matches going into Monday's contest.  MORE>>>

Cohen, the lone remaining Big Ten singles player, who also wrapped up her nation-leading 47th win of the season Monday, will now face Baylor's Carolin Walter on Tuesday.
