Big Ten Advances Both Doubles Pairs and Lone Singles Player at NCAA Championships
May 24, 2005 ATHENS, Ga. - Day two of the 2005 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships saw the Big Ten advance both doubles pairs into the second round, as well as its lone singles player into the round of 16. Northwestern's Audra Cohen, the third seed in the tournament, advanced to the round of 16 Tuesday after defeating Baylor's Carolin Walter in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Cohen will now face on the tournament's top 16 seeds in Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller on Wednesday. MORE>>>Cohen was also victorious Tuesday in doubles action with partner Cristelle Grier. The Wildcat tandem captured a 6-2, 6-2 win over South Florida's Gabriela Duch and Neyssa Etienne. MORE>>> Ironically, the Wildcats' next opponent will be Michigan's Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata, who advanced to second-round action by way of a 4-7, 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Tulane's Darya Ivanov and Maria Ivanov. MORE>>> Earlier this year, both doubles pairs gained a win over the other. Michigan's DaCosta and Delicata upset Cohen and Grier, 8-6, in the Big Ten Championship match back on May 1, but the Wildcat tandem did, however, put together an impressive comeback from a 7-2 deficit to defeat the Wolverine pair in the regular season, 9-7.
