Taking to the court just before her teammate, Northwestern’s Samantha Murray, ranked 41st, needed three sets to upset No. 18 Marina Cossou of California. Her 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win gave her a berth in Thursday’s second round, where she will face the top seed in the women’s draw, Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech.
Wildcat teammate Maria Mosolova also needed three sets to advance out of Wednesday’s first round. Mosolova, ranked No. 13 nationally, knocked off No. 73 Holly Cao of Harvard, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, and will face North Carolina’s Katrina Tsang in the second round.
Tsang was responsible for the Big Ten’s only defeat of the day. Michigan’s Denise Muresan squared off against the Tar Heel in the opening round, but could not get the win as Tsang claimed a 6-0, 7-6 victory.
Thursday will not only bring the second round of the singles draw, but also the opening round of the doubles tournament, where three conference teams will be in action.
