WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD CO-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Nicole Edwards, Michigan
SO, Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey
Edwards has been named Athlete of the Week after earning two NCAA regional qualifying marks in the 800- and 1500-meter races last weekend at the Stanford Invitational. The sophomore took first place in both events and helped the Wolverines notch eight regional qualifying times. She began the competition by crossing the finish line in a career-best time of 2:07.09 in the 800 meters. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native continued her stellar performance of the day in the 1500-meter run, clocking in with a season-best 4:18.98. This is the first weekly honor of Edwards' career.
Kara Patterson, Purdue
SO, Vancouver, Wash./Skyview
Patterson earns the weekly laurel after breaking a three-year old stadium record with just one javelin toss last weekend at the Mike Poehlein Invitational. The sophomore went above and beyond the NCAA regional qualifying standard as she launched the javelin 184'4" (56.19 meters). The regional standard is 43.45 meters. Her toss shattered her previous record of 52.09 meters and surpassed the stadium mark of 54.82. The Vancouver, Wash., native now ranks No. 1 in the nation in the javelin. This is the second Athlete of the Week accolade for Patterson as she was also honored in 2005 (April 11).
