Athlete of the Week

Kara Patterson, Purdue
FR, Vancouver, Wash./Skyview
Patterson collects her first-ever Athlete of the Week award after recording a career-best throw in the javelin Saturday at the Cal-Berkeley Brutus Hamilton Invitational. The freshman faced tough competition as the event featured two top throwers in Dana Pounds of Air Force and Jenna Dean of Washington State. Patterson finished second with a throw of 170-11 (52.09m). The Vancouver, Wash., native earned a regional qualifying mark, set a new Purdue freshman record and posted the second-best mark in school history. Pounds and Dean are No. 1 and No. 4 in the nation, according to the April 5 Trackwire Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relays in each NCAA event.
