The Big Ten Conference office announced on Wednesday the third weekly women’s outdoor track and field awards for meets through March 24-31. Indiana’s Sarah Pease and Illinois Aja Evans were named Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, after landing top-three spots on the national leaderboard last week.
Track Athlete of the Week:
Sarah Pease, Indiana
Jr. - Elizabeth, Ind. - South Central
Sarah Pease led the 3,000-meter steeplechase from the start and won in a school-record time of 10:05.67. The Indiana native finished nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field and owns the Big Ten's best time this season by the same margin. Her time also ranks third in Division I and fifth in the world this season, eclipsing her own school record by 0.35 seconds, which she set at the NCAA Championships last year. This is the first Big Ten Athlete of the Week award for the Hoosier junior.
Last Indiana Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week: Caitlin Engel (March 31, 2010)
Field Athlete of the Week:
Aja Evans, Illinois
Sr. - Chicago, Ill. - Morgan Park
Senior Aja Evans collects her second consecutive weekly honor of the 2010 campaign after finishing first in the shot put with a toss of 55-1 (16.79m) on Saturday at Tennessee's SeaRay Relays. The performance marked the second straight top-finish for the Chicago native, who currently owns the third-best mark in the country in the event. The selection marks the fifth Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week award for Evans’ career and the second this season.
