The Indiana women got off to a strong start as they look to improve upon its fourth place finish at last years championships. The Hoosiers collected 31 team points, with Vera Neuenswander finishing first in the pole vaultand teammate Kelsie Ahbe taking second place. Neuenswander cleared 13-3.5 (4.36m) to tie the all-time Big Ten outdoor record, break the conference meet reocrd by a centimeter and increase her own program record by five centimeters. Michigan State is second with 17 points and Ohio State is third with 11.

Michigan State's Beth Rohl took home first place in the hammer throw after the sophomore threw a mark of 197-09 feet (60.28m), while Kara Millhouse of Penn State won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:02.33 to earn the Nittany Lions 10 team points.

The second day of competition at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am CT on Saturday.
