Big Ten Announces Women's Outdoor Track & Field All-Big Ten Teams & Individual Awards

The Big Ten Conference office announced on Tuesday the 2012 All-Big Ten women’s outdoor track and field teams and individual award winners. Highlighting the list, Ohio State senior Christina Manning was named Track Athlete of the Year and Illinois’ Ashley Spencer was named Track Athlete of the Championships and Freshman of the Year. Ohio State’s Alexis Thomas earned the nod as Field Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Championships, while Buckeye head coach Karen Dennis was named Coach of the Year by her peers. The complete list of award winners and All-Big Ten honorees can be found below. The Big Ten Conference office recognizes student-athletes from each team with the Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Honorees for women’s outdoor track and field are, Illinois’s Ashley Kelly, Indiana’s Emma Kimoto, Iowa’s Betsy Flood, Michigan’s Emily Pendleton, Michigan State’s Rebekah Smeltzer, Minnesota’s Chimerem Okoroji, Nebraska’s Breanna Bussel, Ohio State’s Maggie Mullen, Penn State’s Doris Anyanwu, Purdue’s Leah Eber and Wisconsin’s Megan Beers. These student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
