Penn State Wins Big Ten Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships

The Penn State women’s team won the 2014 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at Rankin Track & Field in West Lafayette, Ind. The Nittany Lions posted four individual crowns and one relay title to claim the championship. The championship marks Penn State’s second consecutive and fifth in the last seven years.

Penn State totaled 136 points en route to the championship, while Nebraska (102.5 points) and Purdue (89 points) came in second and third, respectively. Iowa and Michigan finished tied for fourth place with 86 points.

The Nittany Lions picked up first-place finishes from Brittney Howell (heptathlon), Melissa Kurzdorfer (hammer throw), Mahagony Jones (200-meter dash), Kiah Seymour (400-meter hurdles) and the 4x400-meter relay team made up of Jones, Seymour, Dynasty McGee and Tichina Rhoades.

Michigan State tallied four first-place individual finishes at the championships, including Lauren Chorny (pole vault), Tori Franklin (triple jump) and Leah O’Connor (1,500-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase).

The Hawkeyes and Wolverines picked up three event titles. Iowa’s Elexis Guster (400-meter dash), Khanishah Williams (high jump) and the 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Guster, Brittany Brown, Montayla Taylor and Lake Kwaza claimed conference crowns, while Michigan’s Erin Finn (5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs) and Cindy Ofili (100-meter hurdles) also secured Big Ten titles.

Also earning first-place finishes were Indiana’s Kyla Buckley (shot put), Nebraska’s Annie Jackson (discus) and Maggie Malone (javelin), Ohio State’s Ashlee Abraham (100-meter dash) and Katie Borchers (800-meter run) and Purdue’s Nikki Nunn (long jump).

Nebraska Takes Slim Lead After Two Days of Competition

Nebraska took a slim lead after two days of competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Huskers have tallied 48 points, while Penn State and Minnesota sit in second and third place with 46 and 41 points, respectively.

Nebraska's Maggie Malone won the javelin title, while Indiana's Kyla Buckley took home the shot put crown. Michigan State's Leah O'Connor won her second straight 3,000-meter steeplechase title, Penn State's Brittany Howell earned first place in the heptathlon and Purdue's Nikki Nunn was crowned the long jump champion. Wisconsin Holds Slight Lead After Day 1 of Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Wisconsin holds a slight lead after the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Badgers tallied 16 points, while Minnesota sits in second with 11 points. Michigan and Penn State are tied for third with 10 points each. Wolverine Erin Finn took home the 10,000-meter run crown, while Nittany Lion Melissa Kurzdorfer won the hammer throw title.
