Spencer defended her 400-meter dash national title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships

Through Tuesday, the Big Ten will highlight each of the 24 student-athletes nominated for the conference's Athlete of the Year awards. Award winners are voted on by a pre-selected media panel and will be announced next week.

Ashley Spencer - Illinois - Track & Field
Spencer, the 2013 Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and of the Championships, won her second consecutive 400-meter dash national title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in a school record time of 50.28, which is the fourth-best collegiate time ever and fifth best in the world. The sophomore is a six-time Big Ten champion, winning the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and 4x400-meter relay during the indoor and outdoor seasons, and a five-time All-American. She was named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Athlete of the Year, was part of a 4x400m relay team that set the school record and led the Illini women to the team title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships this season.
