Minnesota's Gentil Tabbed Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week
Sept. 27, 2004
Paula Gentil Gentil earned her second Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the year after averaging 8.11 digs per game in three matches last weekend and becoming just the first League player to record 39 or more digs in a match since October 20, 1990. Gentil broke her own school record with 39 digs (13.0 dpg) against Michigan on September 25, bettering her previous high of 37 against then-No. 1 USC on August 28 in five games. The Minnesota junior moved into fourth place on the Big Ten all-time digs list with 1,569 career digs. She tied a career-high with four service aces against Cincinnati earlier in the week on September 20 and totaled six service aces and 73 digs in three matches. She averaged 0.67 service aces per game and 0.44 assists per game as well as leading a defensive charge that saw the Golden Gophers limit their opponents to a .030 hitting percentage on the week, including a -.024 hitting percentage for Michigan State on September 24.
